Lenovo Legion 7i Review - Gaming Laptop Ready to Work
In September 2020 Lenovo released the Legion 7i, a gaming laptop that presented 'Stylish Outside, Savage Inside' because of the performance and design on this laptop fitting.
Not only for gamers, but this laptop is also suitable for the Content Creator because of its very supportive specifications for the process of working on content.
But with the price that is so included in the upper class, whether the price to value is balanced, exceeding, or even less suitable?
Check out the review of Lenovo Legion 7i below.
Lenovo Legion 7i Purchase Package
With every purchase of Lenovo Legion 7i, you will get large cardboard containing 2 boxes in it.
The box is where the charger or power adapter is a long laptop. And there is also a box where the laptop itself is full black with the nuances of Lenovo typography on the front.
For the charger 230W and the shape is indeed large with its dimensions 16 cm x 8 cm x 2 cm and it weighs around 670 g.
But Lenovo Legion 7i has a Rapid Charge Pro feature is not a problem if it has a power adapter size. I will discuss this feature after discussing the side of the design side of the laptop.
Laptop with a design that isn't gaming
When I first opened a laptop box, the Lenovo Legion 7i was not gaming because it had a minimalist design without excessive knick-knacks, unlike gaming laptops in general.
Lenovo Legion 7i has upscale performance with an Intel Core i7-10875H processor with 8 cores and 16 threads, Nvidia RTX 2070 super graphics card with Max-Q Design, 16GB DDR4 2933MHz RAM, and NVMe PCIE SSD storage of 1TB.
This laptop has also been carrying Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity.
Then the size of the laptop has a length of 36 cm, width 25cm, and about 1.9cm tall.
Laptop weights around 1.8 kg have a solid building quality by carrying out aluminum slate gray colors with charming premium finishing. This laptop screen is quite flexible because it can be rotated 180 degrees.
The laptop that is not very thin with this slim bezel has a shape leaning back to provide space for its port and exhaust. The characteristic of Lenovo Legion is.
From the Meeting Display to Gaming Display
Display not too impressed gaming because there is only a Legion logo and Lenovo logo that scooped on the back of the scenes. But we can turn this laptop from a minimalist to look gaming by activating the RGB which is where the letter o in the Legion logo will be active.
RGB Lenovo Legion 7i is not only on the logo, but it is in several places such as the keyboard, the exhaust part behind, and the bottom of the laptop that gives the nuance of the reflection of RGB when we put the laptop to the table.
All RGB on the laptop can be set through a combination button like FN + Space. But we can also set it through Corsair Icue software so that the RGB settings are more able to suit the term.
This certainly makes the laptop we can use for 2 needs, which is when the need for meetings/works can we deactivate all RGB so that it is not striking, and we can change it to the gaming display by activating the entire RGB Light.
Screen suitable for Content Creator
In terms of the design of the laptop that is not seen this gaming is indeed suitable for professional workers, gamers, to the Content Creator.
Laptop screen measuring 15.6 "with FHD resolution (1920x1080px) carries the IPS screen.
Not yet carrying 2K or even 4K indeed but at least the screen is good at color clarity, IPS.
The screen refreshes the screen is very gaming that is 144Hz so it is suitable for playing competitive games like Apex Legends.
Not only for gaming, but the laptop is suitable for the Content Creator. Why? This is because the screen has been carrying 100% Adobe RGB, 500Nits, and VESA HDR 400 certified with 3MS response time.
Screen specifications can produce a video so that the existing color results are following what they want.
Trueblock webcam features for the privacy of users
Lenovo Legion 7i has a built-in webcam with a resolution of 720p in 30fps which the results of webcam shooting are pretty good.
But the feature of Lenovo's flagship highlight is the feature called Trueblock Privacy Shutter. This feature serves to maintain the privacy of its users.
This feature is simple to give a cover on the webcam that we live pull from left to right so that the webcam is blocked his view.
Besides that way, we can also deactivate the webcam through Lenovo Vantage software.
Regarding the recording of the microphone on this laptop it seems crispy.
The keyboard input is almost 2x faster
The keyboard with the name Truestrike Ala Legion has a switch design called "Soft-Landing" that can provide comfort when typing because the 1.3mm Key Travel provides a better actuation experience so can users use it for hours to stay comfortable.
The keyboard with a certificate from UL Labs is claimed to be able to input 1.9 faster guaranteed to have a response time <1 ms.
The Keyboard Truestrike also has 100% anti-ghosting and spill-resistant. The surface of the keyboard button when the touch writer does not seem smooth and feels premium because the button has an anti-oil layer and high abrasion aluminum stamping.
What the author likes from the keyboard layout design the arrow button is not cut off which means the arrow button has a large size. It makes it easier for us to use the button, of course.
Although it does sacrifice the inability of the keyboard design that should be parallel and reduce the palm restroom, the arrow keys are bigger and rather down it is very functional and makes it easier for users. The palm rest is also actually not too clamps where the arrow keys are safe, no problems.
Lenovo Legion 7i Trackpad has a size of 39% larger than the previous generation of legions and the location is right because it is under the Space button so it doesn't make it wondering with the wrist.
There is another little thing that the author's appreciation for this laptop.
So when we use the Fn key, the keyboard will issue a special light button that will function if we press it together with the Fn key. Small things like this become indicators and help us when you want to use the Fn key.
Diverse port
Earlier the author had mentioned that the laptop's design was rather leaning back because there was a place for his port.
Regarding its port, Lenovo Legion 7i for the back there is an HDMI 2.0 port, 2x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A, Ethernet, AC Power, and Kensington Lock.
Then on his left part, there was Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Type-C, and headphone / Mic Combo 3.5mm Jack. While the right side is USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-a.
From here the port is indeed quite diverse because it provides USB Type-C and Type-a. Another generation has been carrying a USB generation that has data transfer very quickly.
Fast SSD Storage
As the author expects for upscale laptops, of course, Lenovo Legion 7i has brought SSD.
This laptop has an NVMe PCIe SSD 1TB which according to CrystalDiskMark has the following speed.
For the size of an upscale gaming laptop, this is pretty good.
Audio that supports gaming
Lenovo Legion 7i has a speaker located at the bottom.
The intensity of the sound that the Lenovo Legion 7i speaker removed was quite hard but Bright.
Audio the laptop that is powered by 2x 2w Dolby Atmos Speaker System for gaming with this chamber we can set through the Dolby Atmos software that has been installed on a laptop.
The location of the speaker below the right and left side of the audio stereo can support both listening to music and gaming.
Match the location of the sound is good and the sound coming out is clear even though the maximum volume settings.
So when playing games like Apex Legends also the sound of the enemy can sound, really suitable for being.
We can also set audio settings to several modes such as Movie, Music, to Games.
Furthermore, the author will discuss the performance of the performance test for the gaming and battery resistance and the following laptop temperature.
Set everything through Lenovo Vantage
With the many features on Lenovo Legion 7i laptops, Lenovo has provided Lenovo Vantage software that is directly installed on a laptop.
This software has many uses starting from calculating charging estimates until it's finished until we can set the mode on the laptop through the Legion Edge section.
Thermal this mode has 3 settings, namely:
- Performance mode: that will encourage laptop performance with high power consumption and fan speed is also high. This mode only applies when we striking the charging cable to the laptop.
- Balance mode: will automatically adjust the performance of the laptop and the fan speed depends on what the system needs.
- Quiet Mode: Mode that is suitable for saving battery power by reducing computer performance.
Laptop Performance
Lenovo Legion 7i which is powered by an Intel Core i7-10875H processor with 8 cores and 16 threads and a super NVIDIA RTX 2070 graphics card with Max-Q which has an 8GB VRAM that can bulldoze games esports to rendering.
Before trying to play GIM, the author tries to test performance with 3DMark Fire Strike and Cinebench R20.
For the 3DMark Fire Strike got a score of 17634. As for Cinebench R20 in Multi-Core get a 2310 score and in the single-core got a score of 302.
Then for 4K 30fps rendering through Adobe Premiere Pro 2020 with a video duration of about 5 minutes 41 seconds only takes about 2 minutes.
Then the BMW scene rendering test uses a blender to get 4 minutes 31 seconds.
So, how about gaming?
The author tries to play Dota 2, CS: Go, and no other Apex Legends with the right average graphics settings and 1920x1080p or FHD resolution.
As a result, Dota 2 gets an average of 190-200 fps. The maximum can reach 240 FPS and the minimum is 117 FPS if there are skill effects such as the Comet of Invoker.
CS: GO gets an average of 270-290 FPS with a maximum of 389 FPS and a minimum of 220 fps.
Finally for Apex Legends get an average of 110-120 fps where the highest can get at 130 FPS and the minimum is around 80-90 fps if there are many objects such as grass.
The result is indeed by expectations. And sometimes the fps drop is because of some objects in the game that makes it a more burden to the GPU or CPU.
Coldfront technology temperature test 2.0
When testing performance using the 3DMark Fire Strike, the laptop temperature directly increases high.
The maximum CPU temperature according to the HWMonitor is up to 99 degrees Celsius with a normal temperature of an average of 59-61 degrees Celsius and the temperature is at least 55 degrees Celsius. The GPU temperature seems lower at 58-63 degrees.
The heat temperature location that the author feels leans at the bottom of the laptop and the right side below the arrow button. If the keyboard section tends to be cooler.
And considering this laptop has a typical Lenovo cooler named ColdFront 2.0, the laptop fan immediately reads a moment of 3DMark testing.
But it proved that the Coldfront 2.0 technology was carrying out its duties to cool down. From the data that will touch 90 degrees but the average, there can be at 60 degrees.
The cooling system is proven effective.
30-minute charging battery can be up to 50%
With an 80Whr battery, the use of this gaming laptop can be long enough with a short battery life charging.
Lenovo Legion 7i has a feature called Rapid Charge that allows charging laptop batteries from 0 to 50% it only takes 30 minutes.
We can activate the Rapid Charge feature or deactivate it through Lenovo Vantage software.
To convince Lenovo's claim, then the author tried to prove this.
As a result, within 30 minutes of this laptop can charge quickly as Lenovo claims.
Charing from 9% at 7:09 can reach 50% at 7:28. Next at 7:46, it reaches 74%.
Furthermore, this laptop has a hybrid mode feature and Advanced Optimus Technology which will direct the graphical power via Dedicated GPU or Integrated GPU. This feature is useful for increasing the battery life better.
Then for the use of gaming, the author tries to play Apex Legends with Performance mode, the right average game setting, and the settings on the laptop are 50% brightness with 50% audio without RGB backlit on the keyboard.
For a 100% battery, playing Apex Legends can be up to 1 hour 20 minutes. Enough to play 5-7 matches in one charging.
That's for gaming.
Whereas for just Youtube with a volume of 80% and 100% brightness can be up to 2 hours 40 minutes.
